AbbVie and Novo Nordisk are among the largest mostly biotech-oriented companies in the world. In October 2023, AbbVie, a company based in the U.S., had a market capitalization of 260 billion U.S. dollars, while Novo Nordisk had a market capitalization of some 300 billion U.S. dollars. As of 2020, there were 1,500 companies in the United States dedicated to biotechnology, while, in comparison, Germany had 753 companies. Biotech companies located in the San Francisco Area and in Los Angeles/Orange County generate the highest amount of biotech revenue within the United States.

Biotech crops in the United States accounts for more than half of the world’s total. With a total of 88.6 million acres of corn crops in the United States, only 6.2 million acres are considered non-biotech fields. Biotechnology also extends into the industrial sector, providing innovation for nanotechnology, enzymes, and biofuels.
